It sure is a busy time in the sporting world. It is crunch time for several of my favorite teams this week. This is a time to give shout outs to the other sports besides baseball. I think it is appropriate anyway since none of the teams are doing anything in the MLB anyway.
This week my Pittsburgh Steelers will be taking on the New England Patriots. Usually this would be an amazing game, Tom Brady vs. Ben Roethlisberger. New England’s offense going up against Pittsburgh’s defense. That would be a great game. But as we all know Mr. Brady hurt his little knee and is out of the season so Matt Cassel has to step up against the #1 defense in the league. Pittsburgh is #1 in the NFL in passing defense, rushing defense, and total defense. Yes, the Triple Crown in defense. It is going to be hard for Cassel to throw to Randy Moss from his back.
As for my Penn State Nittany Lions, they are already in the Rose Bowl. They smashed Michigan St. to end the season and get the Rose Bowl bid. Now all that has to be decided is who they play. The winner of the Pac-10 plays the winner of the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl. So, it is either Oregon St. or USC. If you happen to be a Penn State fan you are already aware that Penn State embarrassed Oregon St. already this year. I don’t want to watch that again. So I have actually found myself rooting for USC. Although it isn’t like they need my help against Notre Dame. What I do need to root for is for Oregon to beat Oregon St. That would make USC the Pac-10 champion and give them a bid to the Rose Bowl.
Never thought I would say this but, GO DUCKS!
Basically it comes down to the fact that I would rather see Penn State play USC and possibly get beat then beat down or even lose to Oregon St. I think it would just be a flat out better game. I have been wanting to see Penn State play USC for a while now anyway. There is no doubt in my mind that USC will easily embarrass Notre Dame, having Oregon upset Oregon St. is what the challenge will be. But, you never know, anything can happen. Any team can beat any other team on any given day. That is just the way it is.
Any college basketball fans out there? If so I take it you watched the Maui Invitational. All I have to say is damn, UNC is good. Hansbrough isn’t even healthy yet and he is still yammin on people. That kid is ridiculous.
He is going to win Player of the Year again. I am still a little shocked that scouts said he would be a late first round pick in the NBA draft last year. Are you kidding me? He is the freakin NCAA Player of the Year and he is a late first round pick? Doesn’t make much sense to me.
The rest of his team does need props though. Danny Green can knock down a 3 from anywhere over anyone. He is just obnoxiously athletic. Ty Lawson is ridiculously fast. He was running past Notre Dame defenders that were already down court.
As for the Atlanta Braves, they have still done absolutely nothing. They have so much money and are clearly waiting around for San Diego to come back. It is disappointing that there was so much hype for the off season and a whole bunch of nothing has happened. Oh well.
Till next time,
Thought I would finally join the trend and wish everyone reading a Happy Thanksgiving.
I am thankful for everything I have in life and never take what I have for granted. As they always say, you never know what you have until it’s gone. It’s the truth.
Basically, just have fun, be safe, and give thanks. Don’t eat too much that you get sick and be sure to watch some football afterward. The Eagles-Cardinals game preferably because we all know that the Titans-Lions game won’t even be competitive.
Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving everyone
This week the National and American League Most Valuable Player Awards were released. The voters came through this year.
Albert Pujols won it for the National League while Dustin Pedroia won it for the American League. They both deserve it, hands down.
Albert Pujols is easily the best player in Major League Baseball right now. If you deny it then you are ignorant to his greatness. We are talking about someone who will go down as one of the greatest hitters of all time. This year he hit .357 while jacking 37 home runs. That is a ridiculous average while still being able to produce so many runs. He drove in 116 runs while scoring 100 on 187 hits. Guess how many strikeouts he had. 54. As opposed to 104 walks. With some simple mental math you can figure out that he walked almost 2 times for every strikeout. Albert Pujols is a pure hitter, not slugger, hitter. He can hit for contact and power at the same time while keeping up a tremendous average. Pujols deserves the MVP award hands down. A few years back I thought Andrew Jones should have won it, but I can’t complain. I would love to be able to say “I came in second in the MVP voting behind Albert Pujols.” Bow down, this guy is a freak.
I think I’ll also address everyone that says Ryan Howard should have won. Wrong, incorrect, negative, no. Ryan Howard is what I like to call a slugger.
Slugger\slug- ger, noun: someone who swings wildly at everything even remotely close to home plate and try’s to hit a home run everytime.
That is what Ryan Howard is. He try’s to hit a home run everytime he goes up and instead looks like a complete moron when someone throws a curve ball. I actually find his at bats quite humerus to be honest. Howard also has some comical defense at times.
Philly Phans can say that he lead them to the postseason and World Series and someone who wins the MVP should be in the postseason. Wrong again. Some of the greatest players ever played on terrible teams, why should that keep them from winning an award for individual excellence? It shouldn’t.
Dustin Pedroia on the other hand, did make it to the postseason. This kid is one heck of a talent. He plays the game with such a passion it is hard to not like him. He is one of the smallest guys in the game yet he makes his presence known to anyone and everyone near him. He is so small yet he hits the ball kinda like that Pujols guy I mentioned earlier. Dustin Pedroia is a damn good player.
Big game players come up big in big situations. Albert Pujols and Dustin Pedroia are two big game players that come up big in big situations. You have to look long and hard to find another pair of guys you would rather have come to the plate in a big situation. Congrats on the hardware.
Once again the answer is baseball, that’s who.
I’m bring this subject back up because, well, its controversial.
I am 100% for baseball installing some type of salary cap. I think that the fans of smaller market teams will agree with me on this. Not only is baseball behind on the instant replay idea, they are on the money idea.
Baseball is a sport in which the team with the most money signs the best players. What ever happened to scouting, developing, and utilizing players? Those days are almost long gone. Now a team either signs a free agent or trades away their prospects for a home run slugger or ace starting pitcher.
I happen to be an Atlanta Braves fan. Atlanta’s salary cap was about 105 million last year. The Yankees’ salary was about 210 million. That is twice as much as Atlanta was able to spend. How is that in anyway fair? I don’t think it is.
If anyone thinks that I am bias because my team can’t spend so much you are wrong. My favorite NFL team is the Pittsburgh Steelers. They are the 1st or 2nd richest team in all of football. They could spend so much more money then they do, but there is a salary cap. I still support the idea 100%.
Winning a championship should be decided by talent, not how many big players you can sign in the off season. It is just not fair that the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, and Dodgers can buy whoever they want.
I bring this up because I recently heard about a Yankees projected lineup next year. It included the signings of C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Ben Sheets, and Mark Teixeira. I doubt this would happen but the scary thing is that its possible. They could do this and it would not be fair to any of the other teams. New York gets all those great players while the Twins, Rays, and Marlins scrap the bottom of the free agent barrel for washed up vets who are one fall away from a hip replacement.
Please Bud Selig, do something. Don’t let this madness continue. In all honesty, if you don’t change it, then baseball needs someone who will. It is the right thing.
Is it just me, or are the other Braves fans scratching their heads
wondering what the heck happened? Atlanta went from a solid team to an
injury destroyed joke in about a month. I came into the season having
high hopes. Philly is overrated every year while the Mets will collapse
before they can clinch anything. Atlanta had a wide open shot at the NL
East title. Look what happened.
I will be the first to defend
a Braves player to the death. But, in all honesty, they brought the
suck this year. Injuries mutilated the pitching staff and may have cost
Chipper a shot at the MVP. Jo-Jo Reyes threw any ability he had last
year away and didn’t tell anyone. By the way, thanks a lot Jo-Jo. I
liked you, but you killed the Braves this year more than the Phillies.
Maybe you should request a trade to the Royals, thay are used to losing
Not only did the Braves suck this year, I was
reminded of it constantly. It seemed everytime I looked at the tv the
ESPN bottom line ticker reminded me they lost. It didn’t help that my
ESPN mobile updates told me how much they were losing by after the 3rd,
6th, and 9th inning.
Next year looks good though. Atlanta
happens to be loaded while C.C Sabathia will be a free agent. Chaces
are the Yankees will come up with 600 trillion more dollars to sign him
and the rest of the free agent market, while everyone else gets 40 year
old, washed up vets who need a walker to get to their car and an oxygen
mask between innings. Oh well, whats new?
Hopefully Atlanta will
get someone of value in the off season to add to the rotation. I hear
rumors of Jon Garland. Eh, not bad but I want C.C.. If it takes all 40
million they have to spend I don’t care. The man is an absolute beast.
Since being traded it is unfair that he is able to take the mound. The
opposing team should just lay their bats down because there is a better
chance of him throwing a wild pitch and it hitting the bat than there
is of anyone getting a hit off of him.
